Maritime Bowl I
Halifax Subways 21 Saint John Wanderers 19
The
first Maritime Bowl Game was a hard fought battle between two evenly matched
teams.
The Wanderers took the opening
kickoff and concluded a seven minute drive with Richard Naves 20 yard touchdown
pass to Doug McPhee. The convert attempt failed.
Halifax would answer back with
a long drive of their own that ended with Trevor Slaunwhite's 25 yard touchdown
pass to Travis Lobban. Dave Foyers would add the convert to put the Subways up
7-6.
In the final minute of the
first quarter Jon Haines broke loose on an 80 yard touchdown romp to put Saint
John back in the lead 12-7. A two point conversion attempt was no good.
Once again the Subways put
together a drive that ended with Chris Livingstone's 5 yard touchdown pass to
Dave Foyers. Foyers would add the convert as Halifax regained the lead 14-12.
The see-saw battle continued as
on their next possession the Wanderers put together another drive that lead to a
30 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Jeff Thomas. This time the convert
was good and Saint John took a 19-14 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter Halifax
drove all the way to the Saint John 15 yard line where the Wanderers Clifton
Richards' interception got the ball back for Saint John. However, on the second
play from scrimmage the Wanderers fumbled the ball back to Halifax. This time
Alan Wetmore went in from the five yard line and Dave Foyers once again
converted to give the Subways a 21-19 lead.
In the fourth quarter Saint
John drove all the way to the Halifax 10 yard line where a field goal attempt
was blocked. On the last play of the game Richard Naves hit Jeff Thomas on
a long pass to the Halifax 7 yard line. Unfortunately for the Wanderers time had
expired and the Subways were the Maritime Bowl Champions.

The Moncton Marshals came into this game looking for their first win of the
season. They came within 7 minutes of achieving their goal.
After a scoreless first quarter
Capital Area went ahead when Allison Brooks hooked up with Alex Paul on a 25
yard touchdown pass. The convert was no good.
Moncton responded with a time
consuming drive from their own 35 yard line all the way to the Gladiator 10 yard
line only to have Jon Roscoe intercept the ball in the end zone. Capital Area
threw its own interception and this time Marshal QB Ian Beardsworth found
Clayton Powers in the end zone for the major. Capital Area fumbled the kickoff
return and gave the ball back to Moncton. The Gladiator defence held and Moncton
settled for a Gregg Smith single to put them ahead 7-6 at halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter
the Gladiators got the break they need when Roscoe intercepted a Marshals pass
and returned it to the Moncton 25. From here the Gladiators drove to the one
yard line where Rob Barrett swept in for the touchdown. A two point conversion
attempt failed leaving Capital Area ahead 12-7 with seven minutes to go in the
game.
Moncton was unable to
move the ball on its next series and had to punt. The snap went over the
punters head for a safety giving the Gladiators a 14-7 lead. Capital Area
elected to scrimmage from its 35 yard line and mounted a drive in the dying
minutes that finished with Allison Brooks connecting on a 5 yard touchdown pass
to Jon Lister. Danny Gibson added the convert to make the final score 21-7 for
the Gladiators.

Saint John Wanderers 22 Halifax Buccaneers 14
These two teams last played one another in 1962. The Wanderers won that game and
the rematch 40 years later. Saint John took the opening kickoff and used a mix
of runs and short passes to march the length of the field. The drive culminated
in a 20 yard touchdown pass from Richard Naves to Jeff Thomas. Todd White added
the convert.
The Wanderers stretched their
lead to 14-0 in the second quarter when Naves and Thomas combined on a 70 yard
pass and run play. White was again good on the convert. A missed field goal
raised the score to 15-0. The Buccaneers answered back just before halftime when
quarterback Matt Elliott found the end zone on a 5 yard run.
After a scoreless third
quarter the Wanderers drove to the Halifax 5 yard mainly due to a 35 yard ramble
by 240 pound fullback Chris Johnson. From here Naves found Doug McPhee in the
end zone for the major and White successfully added the convert to put the
Wanderers up 22-7.
With a little more than a
minute remaining in the game Jason Warren of the Buccaneers broke loose on a 40
yard pass play to narrow the score to 22-14. The Bucs' attempt at a short
kickoff went out of bounds. The Wanderers were able to run out the clock and

Week 2- June 29-July 1
June 29
Halifax Subways 13 Moncton Marshals 0
In a game between two very evenly matched teams it was the Subways who were
able to capitalize on Moncton mistakes. After a scoreless first quarter Halifax
opened the scoring when a booming punt gave them a 1-0 lead.
On the subsequent series the
Subways picked off a Marshals pass deep in the Moncton end. Quarterback Trevor
Slaunwhite wasted little time hitting Junior LeBlanc with a 15 yard touchdown
pass.
In the third quarter the
Marshals had apparently stopped a Subways drive by intercepting a pass. This
play was wiped out by a roughing the passer penalty giving Halifax a first down
deep in Moncton territory. Rodney Fraser would cap this drive with a 10 yard
touchdown run.
The Marshals had
some success on offencel but had trouble consistently moving the ball. Late in
the second and fourth quarters they were able to move deep into the Halifax end
but were unable to find the end zone before time had expired.

Saint John Wanderers 22 Capital Area Gladiators 20
The showdown for first place did not disappoint. The Gladiators opened the
scoring with a 50 yard drive that culminated in 10 yard touchdown pass by Tyler
Hooper to Jeff Taylor. Danny Gibson added the convert.
Saint John struck
back twice in the second quarter with Richard Naves hitting Jeff Thomas twice on
two long touchdown passes to give the Wanderers a 12-7 lead. With time winding
down in the first half Gladiator linebacker Danny Gibson picked off a Naves pass
at mid field and returned it all the way to the Wanderers 5 yard line. The Saint
John defence would come up with a goal line stand to keep the Gladiators
from scoring.
In the third
quarter a Gladiator fumble gave the Wanderers the ball on the Capital Area 5
yard line. The Gladiators defence rose to the occasion and kept Saint John out
of the end zone, only to have its offence fumble on the first play and give the
ball back to the Wanderers. This time Kevin Muise would bang in from the 1 yard
line for six points. Richard Naves found Doug McPhee for the two point
conversion putting Saint John ahead 20-7.
Gladiator
quarterback Allison Brooks was quick to respond hitting Jeff Taylor on a 40 yard
touchdown pass on the next series. Gibson added the convert to narrow the score
to 20-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Another Gladiator
fumble put Saint John in possession deep in Capital Area territory. The
Wanderers drove down to the Gladiator 1 yard line but the Capital Area defence
came up with its second goal line stand of the game to get the ball back for its
offence. On the first play from scrimmage another Gladiator fumble resulted in a
safety touch that put the Wanderers up 22-14. On the day Capital Area fumbled
the ball six times.
With less than a
minute left in the game the Gladiators mounted a desperate drive from deep in
their own end. Brooks hit Mark Huys with two long passes and then found Jeff
Taylor at the Saint John 1 yard line. On the next play Brooks plunged in for the
touchdown to narrow the score to 22-20. A pass attempt for the equalizing 2
point conversion was incomplete.
The Wanderers would
recover the Gladiators attempted short kick off and were able to kneel twice to
run out the clock and preserve the win.

Week 1- June 22-23
June 22
Capital Area Gladiators 15 Halifax Buccaneers 6
The very first game of the newly formed Maritime Senior Football Union featured
a contest between the defending New Brunswick champion Capital Area Gladiators
and the three time defending Nova Scotia champion Halifax Buccaneers. Played on
the artificial turf of Huskies Stadium in Halifax this game featured two very
evenly matched teams in a hard hitting and cleanly played game featuring tough
defence.
The Gladiators
dominated the first quarter. They hemmed the Bucs in their own end but were
unable to score. Early in the second quarter Capital Area quarterback Allison
Brooks found Jeff Taylor on the Halifax 20 yard line. Taylor made the catch and
then outran two defenders to the end zone. Danny Gibson added the convert. Later
in the quarter, aided by a long punt return, Halifax marched to the Gladiators
10 yard line. However the defence stiffened and the Bucs had to settle for a
field goal. Halftime score was 7-3 for the Gladiators.
After a
scoreless third quarter, the Buccaneers threatened again when a long pass play
put the ball on the Gladiator 10 yard line. However, once again the Capital Area
defence would not yield and the Halifax had to settle for another field goal to
make the score 7-6.
Capital Area
would respond by driving to the Halifax 20 yard line where Danny Gibson's 30
yard field goal was wide resulting in a single point and an 8-6 Gladiator lead.
With less
than three minutes to go in the game Brooks and Taylor hooked up again from 35
yards out on a beautiful down out and down pass play that got Taylor into the
end zone again. Gibson added the convert to put the Gladiators up 15-6 and close
out the scoring.
During
the final minute of play Halifax gambled and turned the ball over on downs deep
in their own end. The Gladiators quickly drove to the Halifax ten yard line.
Rather than attempt to score again the visitors took two knees and ran out the
clock. This display of good sportsmanship augers well for the future of the
Maritime Senior Football Union.
It was
a game dominated by defences. The Halifax defensive line had Gladiator
quarterback Allison Brooks on the run the whole afternoon, sacking him six
times. Neither team was able to move the ball effectively on the ground so both
offences went to the passing game. The Capital Area secondary responded by
making six interceptions.

Saint John Wanderers 19 Moncton Marshals 3
The Marshals opened the scoring early in the first quarter thanks to a Saint
John fumble on its first play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff.
Moncton drove to the Wanderers five yard line but had to settle for a field goal
by Greg Smith.
Later in the first
quarter 40 yard scamper by Kevin Muise set the Wanderers up on the Marshals five
yard line. Three plays later Muise banged in from the one to give Saint John a
6-3 lead.
The second and
third quarters were dominated by defence. Neither team's offence could string
together more than a couple of first downs without being forced to punt.
With less than
seven minutes remaining in the game Saint John drove the ball down to the
Moncton five yard line but could not punch in for the score. The Marshals were
unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. The kick was off the side of
the punters foot leaving the Wanderers on the Moncton 15 yard line. This time
Saint John would capitalize when Quarterback Richard Naves hit Doug McPhee on a
10 yard touchdown pass.
In the last minute
of the game a scrambling Naves found Jon Haines on a 52 yard pass and run play
for the game's final score. Todd White would add the convert to bring the
final score to 19-3 for Saint John.
