Week 7-
August 6 Capital Area Gladiators 9 Saint John Wanderers 1 The
Gladiators and Wanderers hooked up in a classic battle between two unyielding
defences. Neither team's offence could sustain a drive. At halftime the two
teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate.
The Wanderers scored early and often in quickly disposing of the Maroonz.
Quarterback Shawn MacAulay's 65 yard touchdown pass to Tyrell Sparks and another
10 yard strike to Mike O'Reilly in the first quarter staked Saint John to a 16-0
first quarter lead.
Week 6- July 29 Capital Area Gladiators 24 Moncton Maroonz 8 The
Gladiators opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Eric Neilson
returned a punt 100 yards for a touchdown. Moncton would go ahead in the second
when quarterback Dave LeBlanc hit Gaetan Beaulieu on a 40 yard touchdown pass.
Mark Crandall booted the 2 point conversion.
Capital Area Gladiators 16 Saint John Wanderers 8
In the game that would decide first place, Capital Area opened the scoring in
the first quarter on Jeff Taylor's circus catch of Allison Brooks' 20 yard pass.
Danny Gibson booted the 2 point conversion.
Week 5- July 22 Capital Area Gladiators 14 Saint John Wanderers 11 On
their first possession the Gladiators fumbled the ball on their own 5 yard line.
After holding the Wanderers out of the end zone for 4 plays an unsportsmanlike
conduct penalty set Saint John up again, first and goal on the Capital Area 2
yard line. Still the Gladiator defence would not yield and Saint John was forced
to settle for Ron Manning's 10 yard field goal.
Saint John got on the board early in the second quarter on Jon Haines one yard
plunge. Haines would add another touchdown on a 5 yard run in the third quarter.
Manning booted the 2 point conversion. Marcus Whittingham's 40 yard interception
return for a touchdown upped the Wanderers' lead by six more. Manning added a
two point conversion.
Week 4- July 15 Saint John Wanderers 12 Moncton Maroonz 6 The Maroonz opened the scoring in the second quarter when Jan Wicherek scored on a 10 yard sweep. The Wanderers knotted the score in the third on Kevin Muise's 40 yard ramble. Saint John mounted a long drive in the final minutes of the fourth quarter capped by Shawn MacAulay's 5 yard touchdown pass to Reese Roche.
The Gladiators jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead. A 60 yard drive set up
David MacDonald's 5 yard touchdown run. Allison Brooks ran in the one point
conversion.
Week 3- July 8 Saint John Wanderers 14 Moncton Maroonz 6 The
Wanderers opened the scoring in the third quarter. After Stew Kincide
recovered a fumble deep in Moncton's end, Phil Reid banged in from the 10 yard
line. Moncton knotted the score in the fourth quarter when Don Martin scored on
a 35 yard pass from Gilles Gagnon.
The Gladiators jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead when quarterback Allison Brooks
threw two first quarter touchdown passes, 60 yards to Alex Rose and 10 yards to
Jeff Taylor.
Editorial Note: 51
year old Norm Seguin came out of retirement (he last played in 1973) and took a
regular turn as a Defensive Tackle for the Capital Area Gladiators in both of
their games . Norm subsequently retired again after claiming that he had set a
record as the oldest football player in Canadian history ! Moncton Maroonz 1 Capital Area Gladiators 0 (Forfeit)
Due to vacations, injuries and unexplained no shows the Gladiators were unable
to field a team. Moncton was awarded a 1-0 victory. Saint John Wanderers 31 Moncton Maroonz 0 The
Wanderers opened the scoring in the first quarter when Allan Spencer recovered a
Maroonz fumble in the end zone. Ron Manning was good on the two point kicked
conversion. Later in the first Jon Haines rumbled 25 yards to leave Saint John
up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Week 1- June 24 Saint John Wanderers 8 Capital Area Gladiators 6
Gladiator quarterback Allison Brooks hooked up with Pat Dollimore on a 40 yard
pass and run play to stake Capital Area to 6-0 halftime lead. Wanderers pivot
Shawn MacAulay evened the score with a 40 yard scamper in the third quarter and
Ron Manning kicked a two point conversion for the lead. The Gladiators had a
touchdown called back on a holding call late in the fourth quarter. Moncton Maroonz 1 Capital Area Gladiators 0 (Forfeit) The Maroonz were awarded a single point victory over the Gladiators when the Capital Area team was unable to field a team for the final game of the day. During a one hour delay in the Saint John-Moncton game, due to thunder and lightning, a number of Gladiators were misinformed that no more play would take place that day. Their departure left Capital Area with an insufficient number of bodies to play. |
