Tailback Shea Lenehan ran for four touchdowns and led the Riverview Mustangs to a 42-18 win over the Saint John Longhorns in a Maritime Football League game yesterday at Dobson Field in Riverview.

Lenehan compiled 322 rushing yards and Mustangs head coach Rob Weir had praise for his team's overpowering attack.

"Shea was a real force," Weir said. "He had some long runs, but most of his yards came through some hard-earned work up the middle.

"He was gaining 10 yards at a time because our offensive line was pushing their defensive line back five yards off the line of scrimmage most of the time. Our fullback (Justin Savoie) also did an incredible job of blocking for Shea."

Mustangs improved their record to 6-0 while the Longhorns dropped to 3-3.

Mustangs visit the Moncton Marshals (0-6) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rocky Stone Memorial Field.

"Our offence is working hard as a unit and we're looking to get better everytime we step on the field," Weir said.

Lenehan ran for one, five, 30 and 35-yard touchdowns.

Riverview's other majors came on a 42-yard interception return by Mike MacLeod and a five-yard run by Chris Poirier.

Poirier's touchdown came after a 60-yard punt return by John Forbes. Forbes took the return down to the Longhorns five-yard line, where he pitched to a wide open Poirier.

Matt Archibald converted all six of Riverview's touchdowns.

Jamie Barefood caught three touchdown receptions from Reece Roach to account for all of Saint John's scoring. The Longhorns were unable to convert any of their majors.

The Mustangs were idle during the weekend.

RIVERVIEW - Despite a three-touchdown effort from wide receiver Justin Barefoot, the Saint John Longhorns lost to the Riverview Mustangs 42-18 in Maritime Football League action. Barefoot caught three TD passes, totaling 180 yards, from quarterback Reece Roche. Offensive co-ordinator Mike Cobham said injuries plagued the Longhorns as the match unraveled from a 7-6 game at halftime. "(The Mustangs) are a talented team and they grinded us down in the second half," Cobham said. The loss brings the Longhorns to 3-3, tied with the Capital Area Gladiators who fell 29-21 to the P.E.I. Privateers (2-4) this weekend. In other MFL action, Halifax downed Dartmouth 23-13. The Longhorns last game of the regular season is Sunday, at 4 p.m. at Millidgeville Field against Halifax. The Longhorns will finish the western conference in first place if they defeat Halifax and the Capital Area Gladiators lose their season closer against Dartmouth. The playoffs start July 25.

Privateers back home for game

Published in the PEI Guardian on Monday July 11, 2009

The P.E.I. Privateers of the Maritime Football League finally get to see home field this weekend as when P.E.I. hosts the Capital Area (Fredericton) Gladiators.
Game time is 4 p.m. Saturday at UPEI.
It’s only the second home game of the year for the Privateers after being on the road for five of the past six weeks.
The team hosts Saint John, July 18, at 4 p.m. in Cornwall.
The Privateers (1-4) go into Saturday's game against the Gladiators (3-2) with a winning streak in mind as the post-season looms, said P.E.I. receiver Mitch Murphy.
“I think we can win these last two regular season games and who knows what happens in the playoffs,” said Murphy.
P.E.I. beat Moncton 41-0 for its lone win and nearly upset league powerhouse Dartmouth Knights in Nova Scotia last weekend, eventually losing 41-33.
Running back Dave Clark has eight touchdowns on the year, including a punt return and a 110-yard kick-off return. He along with better offensive line play, said quarterback Chris Mutch, has helped P.E.I.’s competitiveness this season.
The MFL playoffs start July 25.
