SAINT JOHN - The big game is still a week away, but the Riverview Molson Mustangs will have one more tuneup tomorrow when they visit the UNBSJ Wolves in Maritime Football League action at 4 p.m. at the Canada Games Stadium here. Riverview and the defending Maritime champion Saint John Wanderers are tied for first place in the nine-team league with three weeks remaining in the regular season. Both teams are 5-0 and neither has been tested to date this season. They'll meet next Saturday in Saint John in the marquee game of the season with the winner, barring some major upsets, locking up the regular season pennant. In the meantime, the Mustangs head to Saint John tomorrow to take on UNBSJ, which sits in eighth place with a 1-4 record. The last-place Moncton Doc Dylan's Marshals (0-6) visit the Saint John Longhorns (3-2) today at 4 p.m. at Simonds Field in Saint John. Moncton and UNBSJ are battling to stay out of the league basement. They meet next Sunday. The ninth-place team misses the playoffs. In another game today, the P.E.I. Privateers (2-3) host the Wanderers at 4 p.m. in Cornwall, P.E.I. Meanwhile, the Moncton Vipers of the Maritime Women's Football League are also in action today. The Vipers (3-1) meet the Saint John Storm (0-4) at 1 p.m. in Cornwall, P.E.I. "We're coming off a bye week and perhaps an easier game this week against the Wolves, so I really like this situation," Riverview chief executive officer Mark Crandall said. "I know some teams might not be looking for a rest at this point of the season, but I think it's good for us. When you're playing a team as strong as the Wanderers, you want to be rested and healthy and be as ready as you can for them." Crandall credited the Wolves with a much improved team this season -- they didn't win a game last season or in 2005 when they were known as the Saint John Seadogs -- but acknowledged his players' thoughts tomorrow will be on another Saint John club as well. "This will be a good opportunity to get our timing down and to make sure everything is ready for the Wanderers next week," he said. "Our starters won't have to play the whole game and we'll be able to fine tune the things we've been working on in practice the last two weeks." The Mustangs and Wanderers have been on the road to meeting in the Maritime Bowl championship game since the beginning of the season. Riverview has outscored its opponents 218-14 while Saint John has outscored its opponents 194-26 through five games. Crandall calls this the best Mustangs team he's seen since they joined the league in 2005. |
