It took the Riverview Mustangs a little while to get their offence in gear, but once they did they were unstoppable.

They broke open a scoreless tie after the first quarter and kept their perfect record intact with a 46-0 victory over the Prince Edward Island Privateers in Maritime Football League action on Saturday at Dobson Field.

``We weren't sure what to expect from them,'' said Riverview quarterback Paul Guimond. ``They came out hard in the first quarter and gave us a scare, but we rebounded well and the scoreboard is indicative of how much talent we have on this team.

``We know that we're capable of putting teams away and it's just a matter of time as far as we're concerned. We're looking for every kind of challenge we're going to get this season and we're going to just hit it straight on like a Mustang would.''

Riverview and the Halifax Shockers, both 3-0, sit atop the league. The Saint John Wanderers are next best at 2-0.

Olivier Eddie nailed a 30-yard field goal on the opening play of the second quarter to give Riverview a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs exploded for three more quick touchdowns in the frame and took a 24-0 lead into halftime.

Steve Cormier scored on a 14-yard run and Francis Best entered the endzone from the one-yard line. Guimond then hooked up with Eddie on a 30-yard touchdown pass.

Riverview continued to pour it on in the third quarter. Guimond hit Cody Hollohan with a 20-yard touchdown pass and Prince Mwenga had a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Mustangs added a single point on a kick through the endzone to make it 39-0.

The Mustangs completed the blowout on Justin Savoie's 25-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Riverview has outscored opponents 126-14 in three games. It piled up yardage seemingly at will in the final three quarters on Saturday.

P.E.I. moved the ball to the opposition 30-yard line on the opening drive of the game, but then elected to punt instead of attempt a field goal. It never threatened to score over the remainder of the game.

``Our offence is well balanced,'' said Guimond. ``Steve Cormier is obviously the guy who sets the tone so we go to him early in games, but after that we have lots of different guys involved.

``I think it was an all-around effort in this game. We had lots of guys involved on offence and our defence came up with another big performance.''

In Saturday's other action, Halifax posted a 41-9 home win over the Moncton Doc Dylan's Marshals, the Saint John Wanderers dumped the Capital Area Gladiators of Fredericton 35-6 and the Saint John Longhorns shaded the Dartmouth Knights 28-27.

The Longhorns are in fourth place at 2-1 while P.E.I. is 1-1 and Dartmouth is 1-2. The UNBSJ Wolves of Saint John (0-2), Moncton (0-3) and Capital Area (0-3) are at the bottom of the league.

Riverview and Moncton will clash on Friday at 7 p.m. at Rocky Stone Memorial Field.

Longhorns hold off Dartmouth for thrilling victory

Football Saint John defence blocks a point-after attempt on way to a 28-27 triumph

Telegraph-Journal

The Saint John Longhorns needed some last-minute dramatics to post one of the team's biggest wins ever.

Defensive lineman Aaron Drummond blocked a Dartmouth Knights' extra-point attempt with 49 seconds remaining as the Longhorns held on for a 28-27 victory in Maritime Football League action Saturday.

Saint John fell 27-6 to the Knights last year but used a pair of touchdowns from Gary Brown and 100-yard rushing days from Brown and Peter Shea to move to 2-1 on the young season.

Jim Mather caught a 50-yard pass from Longhorns' quarterback Reece Roach, Brown scampered in from seven and 29 yards and Shea connected for a five-yard touchdown catch as the Longhorns led 20-6 at the half and 28-14 entering the final quarter.

The Knights made a game of it on quarterback Dan Williams' third TD pass and a 23-yard scramble for another major but fell just short of tying the contest.

In another game, the Saint John Wanderers stretched their undefeated streak to 20 games with a 35-6 victory over the Capital Area Gladiators in the Peter Murray Memorial Game.

Jon Haines led the offensive attack with three touchdowns on runs of one, 10 and 45 yards.

Mike Thomas added another scoring run of 10 yards while Chika ikejiani caught a 50-yard pass from John Hachey for the other major.

Scott Eatman recorded three sacks while Roger Muise and Tanner McDermott picked off one pass each.

Chris Chesworth kicked three conversions while Hachey hit Thomas for a two-point convert

Andrew Hubbard scored the Gladiators lone touchdown on a one-yard plunge.

In other games, Halifax downed Moncton 41-9 and Riverview hammered Prince Edward Island 46-0.

Tough go of it for local footballers

By The Daily Gleaner

It was a rough day Saturday for senior teams playing out of the Capital Area Football Association.

Both the men's DQ Gladiators and women's Curves Lady Gladiators finished on the short end of the scoreboard in their respective Maritime Football League games.

The men's Gladiators lost their third straight game, 35-6, to the Saint John Wanderers in action in the port city. Coupled with earlier losses to Riverview Mustangs 49-7 in week one and 27-7 the following week at home against Halifax Shockers, the Gladiators are 0-3 and have been outscored 111-20. They host the Dartmouth Knights this Saturday at Mackenzie Field in Oromocto.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers extended their undefeated streak to 20 games with the win, getting three touchdowns runs from Jon Haines from one, 10 and 45 yards to do in the Gladiators. Mike Thomas added another scoring run of 10 yards while Chika Ikejiani caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from John Hachey for the other major. Running back Andrew Hubbard accounted for the Gladiators only major with a one yard plunge.

Meanwhile, the defending women's champion in the Maritime circuit, the Lady Gladiators, lost for the first time in eight games, dropping an 8-6 decision to the team they defeated in last year's championship game, Halifax Xplosion. The game was played at Leo Hayes High School Field Saturday.

Tailback Kristina O'Brien on a seven-yard touchdown run accounted for the Lady Gladiators scoring late in the second half. However, the convert attempt by O'Brien was unsuccessful. The Xplosion engineered a scoring drive of its own late in the final quarter with quarterback Erin Cooke going over for the major. They were able to complete the convert attempt, giving them a two-point cushion with just over a minute remaining. That didn't prove to be enough time for the Lady Gladiators, who had won their first game of the season, 13-0 against the Moncton Vipers last weekend in Moncton. Vipers beat the Saint John Storm 30-12 on Friday in Moncton.

"It was a great defensive game,'' said Lady Gladiators coach Marven Nash. "We were missing a couple of key players and they really played a solid game against us. There's a great rivalry between the two teams.''

Lady Gladiators are scheduled to play the Storm this Saturday at Simonds Field in Saint John. They host the Vipers on July 8 before getting a rematch against the Xplosion on July 14 in Cornwall, P.E.I. Before Saturday, the Lady Gladiators had won their previous eight starts including last year's playoff run with three of the victories coming against Halifax.

In other men's action in Saint John, the Longhorns needed some last minute dramatics to defeat the Dartmouth Knights 28-27. Defensive lineman Aaron Drummond blocked the Knights extra point attempt with 49 seconds remaining to post the victory. The Longhorns had lost 27-6 to the Knights last season.

It was a lot different this time as Jim Mather caught a 50-yard pass from Longhorns quarterback Reech Roach, Gary Brown scored a pair of touchdowns from seven and 29 yards and Peter Shea grabbed a five yard scoring pass to account for the Saint John scoring. Longhorns led 20-6 at the half. Elsewhere, Halifax beat Moncton 41-9 and Riverview got past P.E.I. 46-0.

Defence sets tone for Mustangs

Riverview hosts P.E.I. in MFL matchup today at Dobson Field

By NEIL HODGE

There were some questions about the Riverview Mustangs defence entering the season.

``We're young,'' said Jeff Reath, the club's defensive secondary coach. ``We've got new players at every spot on the field on defence. We've got a whole new linebacking corps and a whole new defensive back corps. Our defensive line is intact from last year.

``We've got some youth and speed in the linebacking corps that really has done a lot to pressure the quarterbacks. We're missing some big keys from last year's defence such as Anthony Brown, Kalyn Galloway and Johnathan Forbes.''

Riverview and the Halifax Shockers, both 2-0, sit atop the Maritime Football League. The Saint John Wanderers and Prince Edward Island Privateers are next best at 1-0.

Riverview, which has allowed 14 points against in two games, hosts P.E.I. today at 4 p.m. at Dobson Field in senior men's tackle action. Tickets are $4 per individual, $7 for a family and kids age 14 and under are admitted free.

``Our defence was a concern entering this season,'' said Reath. ``In last year's New Brunswick championship game, we were up by 16 points in the first half and we ended up losing (36-33 to the Wanderers). It's hard to be a defensive coach and not take responsibility for that.

``Our offence did the job and our defence let them back into the game. We had good guys last year, but we wanted to bring some youth and aggressiveness to the secondary to shut down the pass which we've done so far this year. To hold Dartmouth and Fredericton to one touchdown each is a huge step forward.''

Riverview defeated the Capital Area Gladiators of Fredericton 49-7 and the Dartmouth Knights 31-7 in the first two weeks. Dartmouth is considered a top four power in the nine-team league.

The Mustangs have controlled the ball and scored 80 points in two games. Their offence has been able to stay on the field because their defence has been so dominant.

``Our defence has set the tone early in both games,'' said Reath. ``They've allowed our offence to get on the field and do the job. Once we get up a couple of touchdowns, it becomes much more of a control aspect as opposed to trying to come from behind with the winning touchdown late in the game.''

In today's other action, the Moncton Marshals visit Halifax, the Saint John Longhorns host Dartmouth and the Saint John Wanderers host Capital Area. Moncton, Capital Area and the UNBSJ Wolves of Saint John are all 0-2 at the bottom of the league.

Upon completion of the eight-game regular season, the top four clubs will compete for the Maritime Bowl and the next four finishers will battle for a consolation trophy.

The league's worst team will be eliminated.

Reath isn't worried about Riverview taking today's opponent lightly.

``P.E.I. is a much improved team over last year,'' he said. ``I say that based on what they did at the pre-season jamboree and the fact they beat Moncton in the first week of the regular season. They're coming off a bye week so they're rested.''

Does it give P.E.I. credibility the fact it defeated Moncton?

``Well, Moncton was saying they were going to have a strong team this season,'' said Riverview running back Steve Cormier.

``They would've been coming out pretty hard in their season opener. P.E.I. was their first test so they must have played well to beat them.''

Wanderers eager for Murray Memorial Game

SCOTT BRIGGS
TELEGRAPH-JOURNAL

The Saint John Wanderers will be gunning for their 20th straight win when they host the Capital Area Gladiators today at 4:30 p.m. at Simonds High School in the Peter Murray Memorial Game.

The Port City pigskin squad started defence of its Maritime Football League championship a week ago tonight in Moncton with a 42-0 whitewashing of the Marshals. The Wanderers turn their focus to the Gladiators, who are winless in two tries.

"They're certainly a different team without (quarterback) Allison Brooks,'' Saint John head coach Mark Gallagher said about his Fredericton foes. "They still have a talented team, but I'm not sure they'll give us four quarters of football if we play like we did last weekend.

"But every team that comes to play us is bringing their A game. Everybody is trying to knock us off.''

There was no way that was happening to Gallagher's group last week as the Wanderers established an early lead and never looked back.

"We went in there and played really tough on both sides of the ball,'' the Saint John bench boss said. "We were just beating people up.

"The guys are playing the way I've been hoping they would play. They're playing four quarters of football.''

The Saint John Longhorns (1-1) will host the Dartmouth Knights (1-1) at 1:30 p.m. That contest also is at Simonds, which concerns Gallagher and several other coaches in the nine-team circuit.

"Officials are concerned about the shape of the field,'' he said, noting the need for another facility instead of having to play two games at the same site on the same day.

Meanwhile, the city's other MFL club, the University of New Brunswick at Saint John Wolves (0-2), have a bye this weekend. Today's other tilts include the P.E.I. Privateers (1-0) visiting the Riverview Mustangs (2-0) at 4 p.m., while the Halifax Shockers (2-0) welcome Moncton (0-2) at 4 p.m.
